GALICIEN (Sonnenfinsternis | Eclipse August 2026)

Lugo 1 (Römermauern & Sonnenfinsternis | Roman Walls and the Eclipse)Lugo 2 (Die Kathedrale & Anderes | The Cathedral and Other Things)Oseira — Ourense — Tui — Porto

The total solar eclipse visible in northwestern Spain on 12 August 2026 prompted us to travel to Galicia. More or less by accident we ended up in Lugo, which happened to be the only place were the price of accommodation had not yet gone through the roof. But Lugo as well as the other two cathedral cities on the Miño river, Ourense (which we reached via the remote Cistercian abbey of Oseira) and Tui on the border with Portugal, proved well worth the trip.

Lugo 1: Römermauern und Sonnenfinsternis | Roman Walls and an Eclipse

Ave Caesar.

Hail Caesar. The huge Roman walls that still completely surround the city centre are the hallmark of Lugo. Julius, however, never saw them. When they were built, probably in the last third of the 3rd century, he had been dead for 300 years. Even the city — formerly known as Lucus Augusti — did not yet exist in his day. As the name indicates it was only founded under Augustus (13 BCE).

These people are already waiting for the eclipse, which was in fact to take place many hours later in the early evening. The sky was cloudless, not a given in rainy Galicia. We had a plan B that would have meant driving on for another 200km if necessary, even though we had already come from Porto that day, a distance of 350km. But there was no need, so we could take advantage of the afternoon to do a tour of the wall.

The wall is a little over two kilometres long. It is several metres wide and its height is between eight and twelve metres depending on the terrain. The space between the inner and outer mantles is filled with rubble and bits of demolished buildings; also whole cemeteries were cleared and the tombstones reused to fill in the wall. The height of the rampart walk is that of Roman times. On the left is Lugo cathedral. In front of it in the foreground you can see one of the original access stairs.

The rampart walk could be reached via stairs built to a standardised pattern (this one has been partly reconstructed) that were placed at irregular, often quite short distances from each other. Most of the stairwells are currently covered with metal grates.

The wall is densely studded with half towers. Some, however, have disappeared, such as (it seems) here.

Very commendably, access to the wall is unhindered and totally free.

Der Mauerzug im Vordergrund ist nicht römisch. (Woran sieht man das? Ich komme gleich darauf zurück.)

The section of the wall seen in the foreground is not Roman. (How can you tell? I will get back to this.)

Most of the half towers, the majority of which are round, now have the same height as the rest of the wall. Originally, however, they bore superstructures, as can be seen in this engraving of 1850:

The large openings seem strange in a defensive fortification. There is a theory that behind them catapults were placed.

Today only one of the towers retains part of the superstructure.

The cross between a plaque and a metal sculpture states the wall to be a UNESCO world heritage site. It is placed somewhat oddly since the torus close to the upper edge of the wall is a characteristic, telltale trait not of Roman military architecture but of that of early modern Europe. The same goes for the obtuse-angled corners and the incline of the walls.

Jahrhunderts. Bei dem Blumenbeet steht das UNESCO-Schild.

The section of the wall with the torus, on the left, is the Reduto de María Cristina, built in 1837 during the First Carlist War in place of a medieval fortress and named after the then regent. The date does not qualify as „early modern“ but the bastion itself follows 16th- or 17th-century models exactly. The UNESCO sign is placed where the flower bed is.

The Reduto de María Cristina takes up one corner of the wall and is the only part of it that is not Roman. (Since it must be immensively troublesome to clear the Roman wall away completely I suspect the reduto is a reshaping rather than a replacement.)

Shale is the only kind of stone found in the region that can be used for building and the mantles of the wall also largely consist of it. Ashlar like that seen on these towers had to be brought in from further away and was used sparingly. It is thought however that there was originally much more of it, which was later robbed and replaced with shale. I imagine that the good condition of the wall is also due to the fact that most of its building material is of low quality and easily available elsewhere.

The coat of arms above the arch records a restoration in 1781.

Porta Toledana.

Unlike the outer wall the inner wall of the gate consists of shale like most of the rest of the wall. (It was siesta time. The shops reopened at five.)

This is not precision architecture and it did not aim to be beautiful. But the wall, originally surrounded by a moat, no doubt served its purpose of defending the city well. And it has proved durable. For one thing it is built so solidly that during the many centuries when no maintenance took place at all it simply remained standing without suffering any serious structural degradation. For another its sheer volume is such that, inversely, it was almost impossible actively to destroy it before the invention of gunpowder, and difficult even then. As mentioned previously only the number of towers has diminished somewhat (figures on this differ). Similar walls, though less completely preserved, are found for example at Astorga (Asturica Augusta) and León (Castra Legionis Septimae)(the links each lead to an image of these).

We were joined by an elderly gentleman who told us that he too had come by car from Porto that day. With the solar eclipse glasses (actually made of cardboard and foil) you could see that the moon had already largely gobbled up the sun. The camera only saw that the light was getting darker.

The column is a cruceiro, a wayside cross of a type that appeared in Galicia in the second half of the 16th century and became wildly popular. On one side is the crucified Christ, on the other the Virgin Mary (often with the child Jesus) or less frequently some other saint. The inscription is a case for cryptologists, aside from the name SIMON.

The fact that slabs of shale (lajas de pizarra) are even used to enclose fields indicates how readily available they are. The roofs of most ancient buildings in the region are also covered with them.

Everywhere in Galicia (including this lane running along the north side of the cathedral) you are reminded of the Camino (or in Galician: Camiño) de Santiago, the Way of St James. The motives are no doubt as much to do with promoting tourism as with religion. From here to Santiago de Compostela you need to cover another 80 kilometres or so.

Lugo, you are told, has the Spanish cathedral with the widest triforium. There is so much room there that it houses the diocesan museum.

The organ on the gospel side (left) war originally built by Manuel Sanz in 1805. In 1925 it was replaced by a pneumatic instrument in the old case. The organ on the epistle side was built by José Arteaga in 1708. There may be old pipework but the instrument owes its present shape to a rebuild in 1973. The key action is mechanical but the stop action is electric.

The east end of the Romanesque cathedral consisted of three apses, one each for the nave and the aisles. In the 14th century they were replaced by an ambulatory choir. That partly collapsed in the 1755 earthquake, so the clerestory had to be rebuilt and a new high altar was substituted for the old one.

„A masterpiece of Galician Baroque“, I read. And a masterpiece it is. Noble proportions. The sculpted decor manages to be exuberant without drowning out the architecture itself.

Lugo: Praza Mayor mit Casa do Concello (Rathaus | Townhall)(1735)

„Casa do Concello“ = Haus des Rats.

„Casa do Concello“ = House of the Council. In Castilian a town hall would be a cabildo. The information boards around the city are trilingual: Galician, Castilian and English. Most texts that you see around the city (including advertising) are in Galician. When you cross the border from Portugal to Galicia the language remains effectively the same. There are small differences of spelling: ñ and ll as in Castilian instead of nh and lh as in Portuguese, x instead of j in both Castilian and Portuguese (xunta instead of junta); concello would be conselho in Portuguese. In terms of language politics there are two camps. One, the reintegrationists, regard Galicia as part of the Portuguese-speaking world, with which they would like to „reintegrate“. By contrast, the autonomists stress the uniqueness of Galician. When Galician became the official language of the eponymous autonomous region in the 1980s the autonomists prevailed. The two camps navigate between Scylla and Charybdis: reintegration would risk losing what is peculiar to Galician to mainstream Portuguese, whereas the autonomists are faced with the dominant influence of Castilian and its tendency to infiltrate Galician.

Lugo: ehemalige Dominikanerkirche.

The former church of the Dominicans. It conforms to the same type as the nearby church of the Franciscans, which is very different from the churches of the mendicant orders in central Europe, easily recognised by their long monks‘ choirs. Here by contrast you have a short east end made up of three apses. Looks Italian to me.

Lugo: ehem.

The former Dominican church, looking west. The Dominican friary was closed down along with every other monastery in Spain in 1836. Only a few years later it reopened as a convent of Augustinian nuns. Hence the enclosed space typical of a nunnery on and apparently also below the west-end balcony. By the look of it the organ dates from the 17th or 18th century.

Lugo, ehem. Franziskanerkonvent, Kreuzgang.

The cloister of the former Franciscan friary. You do a triple take here. What?? This is impossible. I’m surprised there isn’t more commenting on the oddity of what you see here, which is to say, a thoroughbred Romanesque cloister. From the 12th century. It absolutely belongs to that period.

But the Franciscans were only founded in 1209. In Italy. They didn’t reach Lugo until the 1270s. Did they somehow inherit a Romanesque cloister? No they didn’t. They built it themselves. In 1452, indeed recording the date on an inscription.

I found remarks by the Spanish historian José Villaamil y Castro (1838-1910) to the effect that this anachronistic cloister has no parallel, not in Spain and not elsewhere. Precisely. How can there not be more of a discussion of this? If there is I haven’t been able to get hold of it yet. Why on earth did they build a cloister that pretends (with remarkable accuracy) to be 300 years older than it actually is? 19th-century historicism would, at a pinch, of course have been capable of such a thing, but fifteenth-century Franciscans??

Lugo, ehem. Franziskanerkonvent, Kreuzgang.

The buildings of the former Franciscan friary now form part of the Museo Provincial, with the cloister serving as a lapidarium.

The are a great many Roman-era tombstones and other dedicatory inscriptions, which presumably come from the innards of the city wall. No doubt they came to light when the wall was pierced for additional thoroughfares in the 19th century.

By way of comparison, a photograph from that same year 1875. Alfonso was born in 1857 as the son of Queen Isabella II. Her husband, the Duke of Cádiz, does not appear to have been the father and at first refused to attend the christening. The boy certainly did not get his looks from his mother, however easy she clearly found it to attract lovers. (She had an eye for handsome officers of her guard.) She was deposed in 1868. Following a republican interlude the monarchy was restored in 1874 and Alfonso was proclaimed king on 29 December. However, there was another claimant, his cousin Carlos; Alfonso — an alumnus of Sandhurst military college — personally led the campaign that defeated him (Third, and last, Carlist War). A popular and successful king, known as El Pacificador because his reign put an end to decades of political instability, Alfonso died in 1885, three days short of his 28th birthday. He suffered from tuberculosis, apparently compounded by an acute case of dysentery.

Oseira

We decided to make a detour to Oseira before going on to Ourense. Google Maps made us follow tiny roads through remote villages in the Galician hills. The shortest route, though perhaps not the quickest. Picturesque and increasingly a little spooky, especially with the grey skies. But then the clouds began to part and we caught a first glimpse of the abbey in the valley below.

Dort kamen wir her.
This is where we came from.

Und hier wollten wir hin.
This is where we were headed.

(And of course we are on the Way of St James again. In Galicia somehow you are always on the Way of St James.)

Seit 1929 leben hier wieder Zisterzienser (Trappisten).

A monastery as remote as this could only have been founded by the Cistercians of course. The abbey church was consecrated in 1239. The west front of the church was remodeled in the 16th century, the other buildings apparently mostly date from the period around 1700. The abbey was suppressed in 1836. The Cistercians (in the form of Trappists) returned in 1929.

These impressively forbidding buildings stand to the east of the church and are labelled as a hospice for pilgrims. But they appear to be empty.

The coat of arms of the Spanish crown is prominently displayed on the west front of the church. This is officially a „royal“ place: „Mosteiro de Santa María a Real de Oseira“ (or in Castilian „Monasterio de Santa María la Real de Osera“).

Main entrance to the abbey. An even larger royal coat of arms. Bernini used twisted columns for his famous canopy (completed in 1633) in St Peter’s basilica in Rome, thereby causing them to become popular almost instantly. They appear on the porch of the university church in Oxford already in 1637. The ones seen here are unlikely to be earlier.

Now I need a heraldist. Did the Spanish Bourbons, from Philip V onwards, feature the double-headed eagle in their coat of arms, like the Habsburg rulers of Spain before them? I’m inclined to think that they didn’t, in which case this coat of arms and therefore the entire façade cannot be later than the reign of Charles II (died 1700).

Another interesting and rather enigmatic element. At bottom left there is a skeleton, the figure opposite doesn’t look healthy either. Above them two angels, the one on the left bearing a cross, the one on the right a sword and other implements. They seem to be holding something up or presenting it, but I have no idea what it might be. They are also holding a banner with the words SACRA EREMVS ASCETARVM, „the sacred wilderness (or: seclusion) of the ascetics“. Search engines that I put to work essentially yield only one result, invariably pointing to a publication depicting hermits of antiquity, entitled Sylva Anachoretica Aegypti et Palestinae and first printed in Antwerp in 1619. The illustrations are by the Dutch artist Boetius Adams Bolswerd, among them this frontispiece:

One of a number of cloisters. You can visit the abbey for a small fee, but only with a guided tour, and we didn’t want to wait for that.

Jahrhundert.

Green is medieval, light brown is 17th or 18th c.

Instead of taking the tour we went for a little walk.

Auch das sind Pilgerunterkünfte, diese recht neu.
This is accommodation for pilgrims too, and rather new.

We kept passing structures like this and wondered about them. They are called hórreo and serve to store agricultural produce (we did guess that much…).

In diesen abgelegenen Dörfern stehen viele Gebäude leer.
In these remote villages many houses have been abandoned.

Brunnen. (Mit Wegweiser für den Camiño…)
A fountain. (Complete with signpost for the Camiño…)

Backofen?
An oven?

Ohne Worte.

No comment. (Or perhaps, yes. You reach the point where you realise that there is no single Way of St James. In reality it is a labyrinth. And somehow all paths lead to Santiago de Compostela. At least a great many do.)

(Die Xunta de Galicia ist die Regionalregierung.)
(The Xunta de Galicia is the regional government.)

Wieder so ein Ding.
Another one.

The slats allow for air to circulate but keep out birds. The supports are designed to keep out mice: the horizontal slabs prevent them from climbing up.

Galicien ist voll von Birn- und Apfelbäumen.
Galicia is replete with pear trees and apple trees.

It did not occur to us to follow this road in the direction of the valley or I could have taken this picture myself. Instead it comes from Wikipedia. An image search for Oseira reveals that we were rather lucky to see the place in sunshine.
